Electric guitar, Looks new, $100 OBO
(When I found My Dream Guitar...)
One of my favorite things in life is guitar collecting.
I have so many guitars that now that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find another place on
my studio walls to hang one up. I cannot resist looking in the classified ads everyday to find another great bargain.
The other day I read an ad that simply stated: “Electric guitar, looks new, $100 or bestoffer. (310) 833-XXXX.” I pondered the possibilities. Probably a Asian built Strat, Les Paul Junior copy or maybe I’ll get real lucky. After vacillating momentarily over the possibilities of what the guitar might be, and the probability of 'ticking off' someone by calling them at 7:30AM, I picked the phone up and dialed the number. I apologized for calling so early after an apparently older woman answered “Hello?” with a trembling timbre in her voice. I asked her to describe the guitar the best she could, but the best description that she could manage to give was that "it’s old, but it looks new."
I got the address, looked in my wallet, and counted out $86 in currency.
I hauled ass to the street address that was only about a mile away, with my vivid imagination going wild. I got there in less than five minutes and when I arrived at the door, an elderly woman, probably in her early nineties, invited me in to view the guitar that had been placed on a stack of moving boxes. She said that she "really didn't want to sell it because of sentimental reasons"... "but (she) had nowhere to store it.” She also said, “It’s the ugliest guitar she had ever seen,” but she “hated to part with it because it “had belonged to her son who had pasted away a long time ago.”
I could hear in the background that the woman’s phone was ringing off the hook. As I opened the case I felt my chest pounding as it revealed what could be a rare ’58 Gibson Explorer, of which less than 100 were made.
She confirmed that indeed 1958 was the year she had purchased it for his 16th birthday. I pulled out my wallet and counted out the $86 and told her that was all that I had and she quickly accepted it. I was really feeling guilty when she said, “God bless you.”
And then I woke up...
